Britain Can Breathe Again
As nationwide health concerns follow the fallout from volcanic ash clouds, Nitritex secures stock of the highly effective FFP3 respiratory facemask. The fallout of the volcanic ash has caused an unprecedented international crisis by closing all European airports, but what of the health implications?
National press reports revealed fears that the microscopic shards of volcanic debris could cause problems for people with underlying respiratory conditions such as asthma and emphysema, with the World Health Organisation (WHO) at one stage warning people to wear masks when they ventured outside. “Particulate matter is identified according to its diameter. The small particulates less than 10 microns in size are more dangerous because they can penetrate deeper into the lungs,” says Dr Maria Neira, Director of Public Health and Environment Department at WHO.
The Bioclean high specification, valved respiratory facemask from Nitritex, which provides protection against sub 10 micron particles, is fully tested in accordance with EN149:2001 and provides a particle filtration efficiency of greater than 99% in helping to provide protection against volcanic ash cloud debris.
Richard Bryant, Group Sales Director for Nitritex, global suppliers of cleanroom, healthcare and industrial supplies, said: “The FFP3 masks are thoroughly tested and provide a very effective barrier against these tiny particles”.
Britain's Health Protection Agency (HPA) has stated that because small quantities of volcanic ash could float back up into the air in windy conditions it would be sensible for people with existing respiratory conditions such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema and asthma to ensure they keep their inhalers or other medications with them. If people are outside and notice symptoms such as itchy or irritated eyes, runny nose, sore throat or dry cough, or if they notice a dusty haze in the air or can smell sulphur, rotten eggs, or a strong acidic smell, they may wish to limit their activities outdoors or return indoors.
